SFP Credential FAQs
Do you have an overview of the SFP that I can share with my employer?
Download and share The SFP Difference: How IFMA’s Sustainability Facility Professional Credential Can Ensure a Facility Manager’s Qualifications as Steward of Sustainable Operations to help your employers and others understand the purpose and the potential impact of the SFP credential.
Why is Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability now considered a core FM competency?
Although IFMA has always recognized sustainability as part of the human and environmental factors competency and as an important thread that runs through many of IFMA's competencies, the IFMA 2009 global job task analysis survey elevated it to the stature of a full competency area.
What topics does the SFP program teach?
Never before has a credential offered a deep dive education in and evaluation of sustainable facility practices. The SFP topics incorporate sustainability using a triple bottom line (economic, ecological and social) perspective following a continuous and holistic process of managing the operating lifecycle of the built environment. The SFP credential and training program integrate the new and developing areas of energy, resource management, and improvements to the work environment into the world of the facility manager—the stewards of the workplace.
The SFP teaches the facility manager to develop value-based organizationally aligned sustainability programs that go beyond addressing the obvious and simple sustainability challenges to find the next building efficiency that will improve the indoor environment, reduce fuel and resource-use to zero and have little to no impact on the environment.
For the specific topics taught by each focus area, visit Program Topics.
What will the SFP help an FM professional achieve?
The SFP credential will help facility managers to:
- use knowledge-based and data-driven methods to develop solutions which provide the highest value for their building, organizations and community;
- challenge themselves and their organizations to go beyond the current thinking; take full advantage of the skills and competencies in the FM’s toolkit;
- develop new and innovative sustainable solutions to facility issues; and
- gain the recognition of being an informed champion, partner and steward of the built environment in their organization and the communities in which they live and serve.
Can LEED Professionals earn GBCI credential maintenance hours with the SFP program?
Yes,the SFP program has been approved by GBCI for LEED credential maintenance. LEED Professionals can earn 70 general CE hours upon successful completion of the SFP program.
How can I earn the SFP credential?
The SFP is an assessment-based certificate program. To earn the SFP credential, candidates will need to complete the series of three IFMA SFP Credential Program focus areas and the three online SFP final assessments (included in the SFP Credential Program) with a passing score of 75% or higher. After completing the online assessments, individuals must submit an SFP application (with fee) to IFMA. (After successfully completing the three SFP final assessments, you will receive an email with a link to your pre-populated SFP application form.)
Are there any prerequisites to the SFP credential?
There are no specific educational or experiential prerequisites, however the SFP curriculum builds on a foundation of sound facility management knowledge. A solid understanding of FM practice is necessary for the candidate to fully comprehend and utilize the material in the program.
What is the term of validity for the SFP credential?
As of January 18, 2017, there is no longer a three-year term of validity for the SFP credential. No renewal or updates are required.
What score is required to pass the SFP final assessments?
In order to pass each of the SFP final assessments, you must earn a score of 75% or higher on each final assessment. The number of questions and time allowed varies by focus area:
- Focus area 1: Strategy and Alignment for Sustainable Facility Management: 50 questions; 65 minute time limit. Passing score = 38+ correct questions.
- Focus area 2: Managing Sustainable Facilities: 50 questions; 65 minute time limit. Passing score = 38+ correct questions.
- Focus area 3: Operating Sustainable Facilities: 100 questions; 130 minute time limit. Passing score = 75+ correct questions.
Each final assessment must be completed in one sitting. You cannot pause the assessment and come back to it. If you do not achieve a passing score within the allotted time, you must start the assessment over.
What is the cost of the SFP program onside our chapter?
The cost for the program can be found on the RICS Order page.
Is it possible to review or purchase only one SFP focus area instead of all three?
No. The SFP Credential program includes the combination of all three focus areas. These focus areas are designed to work together to allow the student to gain the knowledge and expertise to earn their SFP credential. The series of three focus areas, taken together and in sequence, provide a complete picture of how SFPs can improve the sustainability of their facilities in all eight major categories of sustainable facility management as defined by IFMA: energy, water, materials and resources, workplace management, indoor environmental quality, quality of services, waste and site impact.
What is the SFP application fee? (Seperate from the course fee with the chapter)
As of January 1, 2017, the non-refundable application fee is US$140 for Professional/Associate Members, US$115 for Young Professional Members and US$250 for Nonmembers. (After successfully completing the three SFP final assessments, you will receive an email with a link to your pre-populated SFP application form.)
What if I do not pass the SFP final assessment? When can I retake the SFP final assessment?
Candidates who fail an SFP final assessment may retake it immediately. There is no limit to the number of times you can retake the final assessment. However, once you successfully complete/pass a final assessment, it will have served its purpose and will no longer be available.
If I fail a final assessment, how do I find out which topics I need to review further?
Click on the Reports link located beneath the course name tab of your online study tools page. Then, click on the Final Assessment Chapter/Topic Breakdown Report. This report will show you how well you've scored by chapter and topic so you can identify exactly where to focus your studies.
How long do I have to take the SFP final assessment? Does it expire?
Access to the interactive online study tools and the SFP final assessments expires two years from the date it was purchased.
After submitting my application, how long will it take to get my SFP credential?
Once a candidate has successfully earned a passing score on all three SFP final assessments and completed their SFP application, IFMA will verify their results and approve the application. Verification may take up to 30 business days.

What is included in the IFMA SFP Credential Program?
The IFMA SFP Credential Program includes comprehensive electronic and/or printed reading materials, interactive online study tools and online SFP final assessments. (Printed materials utilize 100% post-consumer waste recycled paper and recycled packaging.) Visit our training components page for complete details.
What is the estimated time for completing the self-study program?
The length of time the program takes to complete will depend greatly on the person who is studying (based on experience, knowledge, reading comprehension, etc.). We estimate that individuals will require 25-75 hours to complete the entire three-module program and earn their SFP.
How long do I have access to the online component of the SFP Credential Program?
Access to the full SFP program expires two years from the date it was activated.
Once I order the self-study materials online with a credit card, what happens? How long does it take to get access to the online tools, printed materials and other deliverables? Do I have to download anything?
Within 24 business hours or less of your purchase, you will receive an e-mail response providing a link to enroll in the online component. Upon completing the enrollment process, you will have immediate access to the online study tools and electronic version of the reading materials. If you have limited FM experience, we recommend that you begin by completing the online Essentials of FM introductory industry overview and the online pre-test. The program is Web-based, so no downloads are required. Users simply need a Web browser, such as Internet Explorer, to use it.
If you chose to receive printed reading materials, your order is generally shipped within two business days of order processing. Unless otherwise requested, we ship FedEx ground domestically, which takes three to five business days.
Can I take the online quizzes more than one time, perhaps with a different set of questions each time?
Yes. You may take the quizzes as many times as you like. They cycle through a pool of questions, but eventually they will repeat. For the SFP final assessments, questions are randomized each time you take the assessment.
During the training, are there uniform milestones for everyone before the assessment, or can each person move back and forth at will, depending on how they want/need to review and build confidence?
There is a suggested order for people to follow; however, users can take the quizzes as many times as they like, in any order. It is recommended that they begin each focus area by taking the pre-test, then examine their results in the user report. The report will show the pre-test score by topic. The user can then apply themselves to "weaker" areas based on this information.
Can I print hard copies of online items like the glossary, flashcards, progress reports, etc.?
The flashcards are available in a printable format. For all other online items, you are welcome to use your Print Screen function. However, please be advised that the contents of this program are copyrighted, therefore any material printed can only be used by the original purchaser/user of the program.
Can I earn IFMA-issued CEUs for completing IFMA SFP Credential Program?
Yes, IFMA does offer CEUs to individuals who complete self-study and/or instructor-led SFP Credential Program. Learn more.
What is the return policy for the IFMA SFP Credential Program?
You may return your IFMA SFP Credential Program for credit within 30 days of the original ship date under the following two conditions:
- The printed study materials are still in their original condition with the shrink wrap and plastic box intact, such that they can be shipped and accepted by another purchaser; AND
